Artist Statement

I am motivated to make art to create more joy and to heal my own ancestral trauma. I believe art is a primal need and deep form of self reverance and self study. For the last 10 years, I served as an art teacher to elementary school children. I observed my young students express their confidence and self approval as they attacked the page to create with delight. As I sat down to my own blank canvas, I felt a desire to have that experience but instead I was met with self judgment, fear, and a very loud inner critic. I long to enjoy creating and to release all self-inflicted pressure and forms of abuse. Each time I sit down to create is a prayer for healing my relationship with myself. Each time I sit down to create is with the intention of growing more inner kindness and confidence, so that I may embody that in the world. Each time I sit down to create, I practice radical self validation and radical cheering myself on. This piece reflects awakening, as it is a visual record of my meditation. I put down a color and practice giving myself the love I long for. Sometimes I pick the self-abuse back up. I notice and try again. As a granddaughter of holocaust survivors, I stand for self-actualization and liberation. I come up against deep shame, guilt, and terror within myself. I long to release these shackles. I honor my ancestors by reaching for greater levels of self acceptance, compassion, and peace. Enjoying life is my tribute.
